Day 52: Renaissance Architecture (5/17/11)

Standard: 7.8.5: Detail advances made in literature, the arts, science, mathematics, cartography, engineering, and the understanding of human anatomy and astronomy.

Aim: The historians of 2016 will be able to describe the architectural style of the Renaissance period where the Renaissance architects got their inspiration.

Task 1: Submit your homework. If you already submitted it online, you do not have to submit it again.

Task 2 Quick Question: The Medici family gave money to the greatest artists, architects and engineers during the Renaissance so they could do their work. Because of the Medici family, the Renaissance was truly a rebirth of ideas in Europe. However, the family maintained power through corruption, greed, intimidation and violence. Was the Medici family a "necessary evil"? Was it OK that they were corrupt and violent since they were responsible for so much good?

Task 3: If you have headphones, watch this video introducing Renaissance architecture. If not, go straight to the websites below and begin to learn about Renaissance architecture. After you finish exploring, make a copy of this notes document and complete the question about what makes a building Renaissance. (Harvard, these were notes that we were going to take together. Make a copy of the notes so that you can be ready to take new notes tomorrow.)

Task 4: Spend the remainder of the class period working on your project. Remember, for you project you need to teach your teammates something about the Renaissance. After you finish teaching, your teammates will take your five question quiz. Your grade will depend on the quality of your project and your ability to teach your teammates about the Renaissance from it.

Homework: Read about advances in painting and sculpture during the Renaissance in Florence and complete the workbook page.

  1. Technology often acts as a socioeconomic barrier in the classroom. For example, a Title One school may have less technological resources then one that another more affluent school
